Malix-Kai's Birth and First Surgery
In September 2022, our son Malix-Kai entered the world and immediately began his fight for life. What should have been a joyful moment turned into a whirlwind of fear and urgency when doctors discovered he had Tetralogy of Fallot, a complex congenital heart defect. His tiny heart faced the challenge of not one but four structural abnormalities, severely affecting his oxygen levels. Within hours of his birth, the medical team informed us he would need immediate life-saving open-heart surgery. However, our local hospital in Saskatoon wasn’t equipped to handle such a complex procedure, so Malix-Kai was rushed by air to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. As parents, we faced an agonizing six-hour drive, leaving behind recovery from a recent C-section to be by his side. His first surgery was a success thanks to the incredible efforts of the surgical team. It was the first of many milestones in his medical journey, proving his resilience and will to overcome even the greatest obstacles.
